A day for remembering

I was just thinking the other day that my mother's birthday is approaching and with that came along, unfortunately, another memory. The memory of my Grandfather's sudden death. I know it was around my mother's birthday but not on her birthday. Then I was flipped through pictures I took at my Great-grandmother's funeral (which was Sept. 1st) and realized that today was the anniversary of my Grandfather's death. I was also remembering my MeMe today and I wrote a poem for her that I would like to share with you.

To MeMe

A loving wife, mother
And a star,
That shone brightly in my life,
She seemed to guide me,
Whether I understood it or not

My namesake-
Hi Me!
Was our greeting

A hug and then we would sit together,
No words spoken,
None were needed
We just held on to each other

A long life
Full of 11 kids,
And uncountable grandchildren,
I was among the “greats”

I knew her well in my eyes
Though I didn’t know her story
She was a guiding light,
A sun around which our family orbited

Her presence will be missed,
Her playful tapping with her cane,
The buzz of her hearing aid when you hugged her,
Her laugh,
Her smile,

Though the memories may fade,
Her love will remain.
